Moving Amid COVID-19

What to Know

The COVID-19 pandemic is unlike anything our generation has ever seen. Not only has the outbreak affected travel and freedom of movement, but it also affected jobs, lives, and the global economy. Throughout these uncertain times and the changing guidelines of the COVID-19 crisis, life must still go on.

Companies that provide essential services to the general public and the business sector must step up, be ready, and adapt quickly to changing situations. If you’re facing the daunting challenge of moving during the COVID-19 crisis, rest easy. Moving companies can help you as an essential business. They take a wide range of precautions to ensure your move is easy, safe, and virus-free.

Here’s an overview of what you should know about how coronavirus is affecting relocating and what we can do together during this crisis to make your move safer and as stress-free as possible. Please keep in mind guidelines and state rules are changing almost daily so please check with official Federal, State, and Local government websites for up-to-date information.

The information here explains how the Central Maine Moving & Storage team takes precautions and addresses this crisis. It should not be used as a medical resource.

Are movers still moving amid the concerns?

Yes. Despite shutdowns among businesses and shelter-in-place orders in some states, many people still need to move. In many cases, moving isn’t an option and can’t be postponed. Your lease may be ending. You’re already in the middle of moving. You’ve started a new job. You’ve closed on a new home.

Moving companies are also still operating and hard at work in every state. In most states, including Maine, movers are considered an “essential service” and allowed to continue to operate provided everyone follows social distancing guidelines. No state has currently barred moving companies from shutting down. Moving Companies typically fall under the “logistics” and “transportation” categories. At the federal level, shipping businesses are also considered essential.

Is it safe to move during the COVID-19 outbreak?

Yes, moving during these challenging times can be safe as long as you have a “moving plan” and follow recommended guidelines on social distancing, hand washing, and other best practices. The American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) made recommendations for both movers and consumers to make moving as safe as possible.

Keep in mind when taking the right precautions movers are considered low-risk for the transmission of COVID-19. Moving crews typically only help one or two customers per day. They usually maintain a high degree of social distancing during the course of the move.

Please Note:

*If you are in a high-risk group, over age 60, or have a compromised immune system, take every precaution. Schedule your move after the pandemic ends, if at all possible.
